Barthes’ Hermeneutic Code (Enigma Code)

The scene I have chosen is from Harry Potter; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzZ7WCRRjs4

There are many ways in which suspense is created in this scene as we are unsure what it going on, firstly, as there is low-key-lighting which means that we can struggle to see what is going on in the scene and unsure what could be lurking around to harm or even kill someone. We can only really focus on the main character in the centre of the screen until someone new comes into the scene, which we discover later on.

Furthermore, throughout this scene the camera shot used is a medium shot, which allows the viewers to closely see the facial expressions of the characters and how they are feeling and also some background, which is tough to see as low-key-lighting is being used. We can see that the main character in the scene is clearly scared or worried about something and wants to investigate what the noises are coming from.

Diegetic sound is being used as the character in this scene can hear a background noise. They cannot see what is going on and se are intrigued to go an investigate what Is happening. We can hear animals in the distance and what seems to be some people walking around as well, which is realised from the cracking of twigs in the distance.

A two shot is also used within this scene and it fills the frame with a creepy and scary atmosphere as these two characters have never had an interaction before and one of the characters is clearly more confident than the other.

The location of this scene is also very important, as it is set in the woods and this is seen to be quite a daunting and scary place, and in the woods people generally cannot see what is going on and what is happening so they are creeped out instantly from this. The fact that it is at night as well creates an even spookier tone for the characters as they cannot see much which is represented in the low-key-lighting used.
