Ferguson's ideas
- Women’s magazines constantly reiterate the need to ‘Be more beautiful’, providing readers with what they should aspire to look like, before providing them with the tools to achieve a desired ‘look’.
- ‘getting and keeping a man’ is commonly seen as a primary goal in women’s magazines. Making oneself more attractive is therefore seen as a woman’s ‘duty’.
How are Ferguson's ideas about the representation of women in women's magazines evident in this text?
The Ferguson theory states that woman always have to be better looking more beautiful by using the tools that the media directly provide them with. An example of this theory being shown is the Sunsational Saltana advert. it portrays a good looking woman on a surfboard, holding a platter, smiling with perfectly tied up hair. she being beautiful whilst surfing and holding a this which shows she is skilful and is trying to show off her skills because she may be trying to 'get and keep a man'. these are the three main roles for women to attain in life. the beautiful look, the home baking skills, and not exactly being able to surf but tells women that whatever it is they are doing they need to always look the best an exceed the standard. She is going beyond what a normal woman would be expected to do in this time period.
