Historical Task: Find examples from your historical magazine (Woman’s Realm) that support (or challenge) the view that variety, creativity and quality are limited.
Examples from this text:
- This magazine cover is similar to magazines produces today and this shows that the older versions are still good, there has not been much change in the magazine industry either, and this may be a reason why it is going into decline.
- Another example from the cover of Women’s Realm that supports the idea that variety, creativity and quality are limited by the narrow range of magazine distributors during the time period, can be found in the cover lines of the edition. In the cover lines, there is only headings which give the readers an insight as to what is going to be inside the magazine. Creativity isn't really shown here but it is simple and it may stand out form the crowd.
- On the contents page, there is a fiction section and this is where people can publish stories and be creative. This encourages creativity, as they are blowing people to send stories in which could be published.
Woman, Woman’s Realm and Vogue are mainstream publications and, it could be argued, can be seen to uphold many traditional ideologies surrounding gender (in relation to domesticity, motherhood, fashion and beauty for example) and perpetuate many narrow and stereotypical ideals of feminine beauty.
The idea that more socially diverse patterns of ownership help to create the conditions for more varied and adventurous media productions
The contemporary, non-mainstream set products re ect different patterns of ownership - this arguably results in more diverse and adventurous products that convey a wider range of ideologies than many mainstream consumer lifestyle magazines.
Contemporary Task: Find examples from your contemporary non-mainstream magazine that support (or challenge) the view that its ownership allows for more varied and adventurous content.
In the Ocalan's angels advert cover, we can see that there is a woman in army wear, she is equipped and read to fight. One example where there is more varied and adventurous content can be seen in the fact that there is fields of green which she is standing on, and in the backdrop the fields aren't as green but more brown. The change in colour shows how there is life running out as she is in a war zone, this makes sense. The fact that she is standing on the only green bit shows that she could be successful in the fight.
The woman in the picture has a gun and this shows that she will be willing to use it if she needs to defend herself or to fight the opponent. She is part of an army with other 'female fighters' and she is Turkish, and woman are not allowed to fight in the army in Turkey so woman have made their own army to fight for what they think is right and to defend. In heavy religious, third world countries woman are not allowed to fight and this is clearly annoying some woman and causing them to brea out and do their own thing.

In this advert we can see immigrants who have come from other places over the world to escape violence and war in their countries, so they have moved for safety reasons and to live a happier lifestyle. This advert is varied and adventurous because some of the people which you see skating and in the community of skaters, you wouldn't expect them to be. So this is also saying that anyone can do anything.
